The story is described as being set in a distant fairytale field for a long time and focuses on a young woman (Sophia Lillis) who takes her little brother (Sam Leakey) to a dark forest in desperate search of food and work, just to stumble into a terrifying nexus of evil.

Gretel & Hansel is directed by Oz Perkins. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger and Dan Kagan produced. Perkins wrote the screenplay with Rob Hayes based on Hansel and Gretel for The Brothers Grimm. Orion Pictures launches the new nightmare in theaters on January 31, 2020 .

Perkins explained in an interview with ai creed that the title was changed because this version focuses on Gretel, saying, » We tried to find a way to make it more of a maturing story. I wanted Gretel to be a little older than Hansel, so they didn’t look like two twelve-year-olds – but one sixteen and one 8. There was a feeling that Gretel needed to take Hansel everywhere, and how that can prevent evolution itself, like our attachments and the things we love to sometimes hinder our growth . ”
